The Jewel Heist in Cannes

Updated: Jul 3

French police are investigating one of the largest jewel heists in history, which occurred in the glamorous coastal city of Cannes. This spectacular robbery, carried out at the luxurious Carlton Hotel, involved over $130 million worth of jewels.

The heist took place during a jewelry exhibition on the city's famous seaside boulevard, La Croisette. The most surprising aspect of the case is that it was executed by a single armed man, according to local authorities. This daring thief managed to enter the hotel and carry away the jewels displayed in the showcases in a suitcase, although it is still unknown who the jewels belonged to.

Cannes, known worldwide for its international film festival, has become a magnet for thieves who see the city as an opportunity to steal high-value items.

This incident adds to a series of high-profile thefts on the French Riviera. During the last film festival in May, the Novotel Hotel was the scene of a robbery where a case of Chopard jewels, initially valued at over $1 million, disappeared. Although Chopard later downplayed the value of the stolen jewels, no precise figures were disclosed.

Days later, jeweler De Grisogono reported the theft of a necklace valued at nearly $2.7 million during a party in Cap d'Antibes, a coastal town near Cannes.

The largest jewel heist in history occurred in 2003 at the Antwerp Diamond Center in Belgium, where thieves made off with over $140 million in diamonds.

Cannes continues to be a tempting destination for criminals due to its concentration of wealth and luxury.
